Radiodetection C.A.T4 & Genny4 Cable Avoidance Kit | CAT & Genny Hire
Hire the industry-standard Radiodetection C.A.T4 and Genny4 cable locator kit. Prevent utility strikes with dual-frequency precision. Flexible, affordable hire rates.
Product Description
Ensure maximum safety on-site and prevent costly utility strikes with our premium Radiodetection C.A.T4 and Genny4 Cable Avoidance Kit available for immediate hire. This industry-leading locater system is designed to find buried pipes, telecom lines, and live power cables before any excavation or groundbreaking work begins.
The C.A.T4 (Cable Avoiding Tool) features advanced digital processing and an intuitive visual display to pinpoint underground services quickly. Paired with the Genny4 Signal Generator, the system utilizes simultaneous dual-frequency scanning. This allows you to map out standard utilities while easily detecting smaller, tricky targets like street lighting spurs and dropped telecom cables.
Whether you are a groundworker, utility contractor, or civil engineer, hiring this calibrated C.A.T and Genny kit ensures compliance, improves site safety, and keeps your project on schedule.
Key Features
- Simultaneous Dual-Frequency Locator: The Genny4 transmits two frequencies at the same time to locate standard utilities alongside small-diameter telecom cables.
- Avoidance Mode™: Speeds up your initial site sweeps by scanning for Power, Radio, and Genny signals simultaneously.
- Dynamic Overload Protection: Automatically filters out high levels of electrical interference, making it perfect for use near substations or heavy railway lines.
- StrikeAlert™ Technology: Optional automatic warning feature flashes on-screen to alert the user of shallow, highly dangerous buried cables.
- Signal Boost Mode: Instantly boost your Genny4 signal output by up to 10x to track utilities over longer distances or deeper depths.
- Real-Time Depth Estimation: Instantly measures the depth of the buried utility at the press of a button when used in Genny mode.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Cable Avoidance Kit Hire
Do I need training to use a C.A.T4 and Genny4 kit?
Yes. While the system is highly intuitive, standard health and safety guidelines (such as HSG47 in the UK) require operators to be competent. We highly recommend completing a recognized cable avoidance training course before operating the equipment on-site.
What is the maximum depth a C.A.T4 can detect?
In ideal ground conditions, the C.A.T4 can detect signals from utilities buried up to 3 metres (10 feet) deep. When using the Genny4 in active mode, the tool can also provide an estimated depth measurement at the press of a button.
Can a C.A.T4 find plastic water pipes?
No, standard cable locators only detect metallic pipes and conductive cables. However, you can locate plastic water pipes or clay ducts if you insert a flexible trace rod (or sonde) into the pipe and connect it directly to the Genny4 signal generator.
What is the difference between Avoidance Mode and Genny Mode?
- Avoidance Mode™ scans for Power, Radio, and Genny signals simultaneously to give you a fast, comprehensive overview of the area.
- Genny Mode focuses purely on the specific frequency sent out by your Genny4 transmitter, allowing you to trace one specific pipe or cable through a crowded network.
Does the hire kit come fully calibrated?
Yes. All of our Radiodetection equipment is inspected, tested, and fully calibrated before dispatch. A valid calibration certificate is provided inside your heavy-duty carry bag so you remain fully compliant on-site.
What happens if the StrikeAlert warning flashes?
If the StrikeAlert feature flashes on your screen, it means a shallow cable (typically less than 0.3 metres deep) has been detected. You must stop mechanical digging immediately and carefully switch to hand-digging tools to expose the service safely.
